Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “bayağı sindirilebilirler”) tanılamamlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine ilgilanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile öbürü arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok sayıda polipeptit alt birimi çitndırır). Baş üstelik peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, vesair amino asite devamlı, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle ilgilanır. Polipeptid örgüsına taşlıklan amino asitlerin her biri örgüya peptid ilgilarıyla ilgilanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir su çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine taşlıklan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin vesair ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
